Straightforward Answers About Invisalign at Charles Street Dental
If you’ve been thinking about Invisalign in Rockford IL, you probably have two questions before anything else: will it actually work for my teeth, and what is this going to cost me. We try to answer both at the first visit, in plain language, before you’ve committed to anything.
Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable trays to move teeth a little at a time. You wear each set for about a week or two, then swap to the next. Most adults wear them 20 to 22 hours a day and take them out to eat and brush. It’s a simpler routine than braces, but it only works if you wear the trays.
Dr. Shin sees patients from Rockford, Cherry Valley, Loves Park, Machesney Park, Belvidere, and Roscoe who want their teeth straighter without spending two years in metal brackets. Some are adults who skipped orthodontics as kids. Some are parents who had braces once and don’t want a second round. A few are teens whose cases are a good fit for aligners instead of wires.
How Invisalign Actually Moves Your Teeth
We start with a digital scan of your teeth. No traditional impression material, no waiting for a tray to set. The scan goes to the Invisalign lab along with Dr. Shin’s treatment plan, and you’ll get a preview of roughly where your teeth will land at the end. That preview is useful, but it’s a projection, not a guarantee. Real teeth move a little differently than a simulation.
Most cases involve small tooth-colored attachments bonded to a few teeth. They give the aligners something to grip so they can rotate or tip a tooth into position. The attachments come off when treatment ends. Some cases also use small contoured spaces between certain teeth to make room for movement. We’ll walk you through whatever your plan needs at the consult.
Average treatment length runs six to eighteen months depending on how much movement is needed. Mild crowding or a relapse from old braces can wrap up faster. Bigger bite corrections take longer. We see you every six to ten weeks to check progress and hand off the next batch of trays.
Who's a Good Candidate for Clear Aligners (and Who Isn't)
Invisalign handles a wide range of cases now: crowding, spacing, mild to moderate bite issues, and the slow drift that happens years after braces come off. If your teeth are reasonably healthy and your gums are stable, you’re probably a candidate. If you have active gum disease or untreated decay, we’ll get those sorted first. Moving teeth through inflamed bone is a bad idea, and we’ll say so.
There are still cases where traditional braces do a better job. Severe rotations, significant jaw discrepancies, or teeth that need to be moved long distances sometimes call for brackets and wires, or a combination of the two. If Invisalign isn’t the right tool for what your bite needs, we won’t push it. You can read more on our page comparing the two approaches.
Teens with most of their adult teeth in can often use Invisalign successfully, but it takes some honesty about wear time. If a teenager isn’t going to keep the trays in for 20-plus hours a day, braces may actually be the easier path. We talk through that openly with parents at the consultation.
What's Included When You Start Invisalign Here
Your Invisalign treatment at Charles Street Dental includes the initial records and digital scan, the full series of aligners through the end of active treatment, all progress visits with Dr. Shin, any mid-course refinements the lab recommends, and a set of retainers when you finish. We’d rather quote you a single number up front than nickel-and-dime you later.
Because we’re a full-service office, the related work stays under one roof. If a tooth needs a filling before treatment starts, we handle it. If you want to whiten after your teeth are straight, that conversation happens at the same chair. The same goes for a cracked tooth, a cleaning, or a night guard if you grind. One practice, one record, one team.
After active treatment, retainers do the heavy lifting of keeping everything where it landed. Teeth want to drift back toward where they started, especially in the first year. We fit you for retainers when you finish, go over a wear schedule, and check them at your regular cleanings.
Paying for Invisalign: Insurance, Financing, and Honest Numbers
Many dental plans now include some orthodontic benefit for adults and teens, often as a lifetime maximum rather than an annual one. We accept Delta Dental Premier, Cigna, HRI/Paramount, and all PPO plans, and we’ll check your orthodontic coverage before treatment starts so you know what the plan will pay and what’s left for you.
For the balance, CareCredit lets you spread payments over several months or longer with options that work for most household budgets. We also offer in-office payment plans for Invisalign so you’re not putting the whole fee on a card. If you’d like a full breakdown before the consult, our Cost of Invisalign page goes deeper into the numbers.
If cost is the thing keeping you from starting, say so. We can sometimes phase treatment, look at a shorter-form Invisalign option for milder cases, or point you toward a payment structure that makes more sense. That conversation is part of the consult, not a separate appointment.
What You Get Out of Straightening Your Teeth with Invisalign
Straighter teeth are easier to clean, which usually means fewer cavities and less gum inflammation over the years. Bites that line up properly tend to wear more evenly, which protects the enamel on your back teeth and can take pressure off your jaw joints. The cosmetic part is what most people come in for, but the long-term mechanical part is the bigger payoff.
The other piece is how Invisalign fits into your week. The trays come out for meals, for coffee, for the occasional work dinner where you don’t want to think about your teeth. People at your job probably won’t notice you’re in treatment unless you tell them. That matters to a lot of our adult patients.
Outcomes depend on wear time, biology, and follow-through with retainers afterward. We’re honest about that. When patients do their part, the results tend to hold for the long haul.
